Breakfast at the Inn

At the Phineas Swann, we are very proud of our breakfast fare. John prepares hot breakfasts that will tempt even the most seasoned breakfast-skippers to indulge. Breakfast is served to guests in our glass enclosed dining porch. In the morning, this area is flooded with sunlight, and guests can easily view the birds at the many birdfeeders in Jay's gardens outside.

The highlight of our dining area is a huge hand-carved 1880's oak sideboard, 9 feet tall, and weighing in at over 2,000 pounds. Each morning at 7 am, John covers this piece with huge helpings of breads, cereals, juices, coffee and tea, and a large selection of chopped fresh fruit for those who want to get an early start - perhaps to hit the slopes in winter, or bike and hike in the summer. These goodies are also kept around a bit later for our late risers.

After sampling selections from our sideboard, guests enjoy a hot country breakfast from our kitchen. John's specialties include raspberry stuffed French toast, huge country omelets stuffed with Vermont cheddar cheese, strawberry crepes, and his famous banana walnut pancakes. Being a classically trained chef, John may surprise you with something special if you notify him a few days in advance that you are an adventurous eater!!

We use only the freshest ingredients in our breakfasts, and local ingredients when available. Depending on the time of your visit, you may find local strawberry and raspberry preserves, handmade potato breaf from the baker down the road, and pure Vermont maple syrup from one of the local sugarhouses, among other tasty local treats.

The Phineas Swann is able to accommodate guests who have special dietary needs, including lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, diabetic, and even all three together. Please let us know in advance if you have any allergies or dietary needs so we can do our best to accommodate you during your stay.

Hot breakfast is served between 7:30 and 8:30 am in winter and between 8:30 and 9:30 am in the summer months. Breakfast can be served a little later upon request, and there's always enough delicious food that you probably won’t need to eat any lunch. We can also, with a little bit of warning, provide packed lunches for a nominal fee if you plan to be out and about.

"Jay Kerch and John Perkins run the Phineas Swann Country Inn, a well-kept century-old farmhouse located near the foot of Jay Peak. Wake up to a belt-loosening breakfast of omelets stuffed with Vermont Cheddar cheese, maple-sugar-battered bacon, and strawberry-preserve crêpes—a recipe John picked up in the South of France."

- New York Magazine

Our breakfast porch looks out upon the gardens, where countless birds gather at our many birdfeeders.

The breakfasts were so incredible! Imagine raspberry stuffed French toast ...raspberry preserves put up by a local woman, potato bread made by a friend (who also grew the potatoes), maple syrup from neighbor down the road...it doesn't get much better than this folks! Oh did I mention that the eggs in the side order of scrambled came from one of Phineas Swann's employee's chickens?!
This was an experience we will always treasure....treat yourself and enjoy the comfort and pampering in this quiet Vermont village.
