Common Areas at The Phineas Swann
Dining Room
Licensed to hold dinner parties for 24, and receptions for 125, our dining room runs into our sun room and we have seating for over 30 for private parties and events. Civil Union parties are our specialty!
The highlight of this room is a huge hand-carved 1880s oak sideboard, 9 feet tall, and weighing in at over 2,000 pounds. It was delivered in four pieces, and took our carpenter over 30 hours to repair and put back together, as it was too large to fit thru the door.
Each morning at 7 a.m., John will cover this piece with huge helpings of breads, cereals, juices, coffee and tea, and a large bowl of fruit salad for those early risers who want to get an early start to hit the slopes in winter, or bike and hike in the summer. Hot breakfast is served between 7:30 and 8:30, in winter and between 8:30 and 9:30 in the summer months. Breakfast can be served a little later on request, and there's always enough delicious food that you probably won’t need to eat any lunch. We can also, with a little bit of warning, provide packed lunches for a nominal fee if you plan to be out and about.
John's specialties include raspberry stuffed French toast, huge country omelets, and his famous banana walnut pancakes. Being a classically trained chef, John may surprise you with something special if you notify him a few days in advance that you are an adventurous eater!!
Our large country kitchen has enough storage capacity to easily serve over 50 guests for dinner if needed.
The Den
Our cozy and private sitting room/library features a large overstuffed tapestry chair and ottoman along with a huge pillow-strewn sofa with leather arms and back, within comfortable viewing distance of our brand new 32 inch Plasma Sharp Aquos television screen on the wall.
Notice the antique advertisement for Coca Cola on the wall - one of Jay's many vintage and antique advertisements gracing the inn.
The room also has an antique bookshelf filled with over 100 DVDs from our library for you to use in the room, or take back to your bedroom to view on your private flat screen LCD television discreetly hanging on the wall at the foot of your bed. We try to keep a current list of the DVDs, but the collection just keeps growing too fast!
Music Room
This room contains a baby grand player piano, black of course, that plays over 3000 songs via CDs. We are constantly adding to our library. Jay's favorites are the Liberace Christmas Carols! Anyone who wishes to play it is more than welcome to, as all Jay can play is chopsticks!!
This room also contains two comfy down filled swivel glider rocking chairs covered in a green and gold damask fabric.
They are brand new (not vintage antiques!), so don't be shy. They are perfect for sitting in and reading your favorite book by the light of the reading lamp overhead.
One of the highlights of this room is a fabulous ornately carved marble topped console table with a face of old man winter topped by a marbleized 5 foot tall split pediment mirror. On the floor is a stunning hand-made Persian rug. In the corner is a window seat built into the bay window for watching the cars drive by.
Living Room
This room has a newly added masonry fireplace, kept full of firewood for those cold fall and winter evenings. We have furnished this bright and airy room with two large navy blue Italian leather sofas, down filled for your comfort.
In addition, we have two large plaid custom made wing chair recliners for stretching out by the fireplace and reading your favorite book. We have a pie fold game table with four black Windsor arm chairs for playing cards or perhaps completing one of the many puzzles in Jay's collection.
Also in this room is a buffet table with an assortment of freshly baked goodies provided by the previous owner of the Inn. Glen is well-known over the entire area for his baking prowess, and we begged him to stay on as our house baker.
Also available at all times are hot coffee or tea, since we have a Keurig Coffee Maker which instantly brews individual cups of flavored coffees or teas. There is also a chilled and heated fresh spring water on tap from a mahogany covered water cooler which we had specially made by a firm in Canada. In the winter we often serve hot cocoa or mulled apple cider and, in the summer, iced lemonade or tea. We also have provided an icemaker right in the room, so you can never run out of ice day or night and soda pops are free! Or if you would like a cold beer, chilled white wine, or red wine just ask!!
Hanging in the windows in this room are stained glass panels created by Jay's sister, Jenny.
Riverbank on the Trout River
All guests are welcome to relax by the beautiful Trout River. A book, a glass of wine, and the river's murmur will cure many an ill from an over-stressed urban lifestyle.
