Our Gardens

Relax amidst the splendor of our glorious flower gardens!  Jay has developed a botanical retreat on the grounds of the Phineas Swann Inn - colorful and bounteous, our flower gardens are brimming with all kinds of annuals and northern-variety perennials.

Every year, Jay's dedication to the beauty of the grounds adds something new to our already extensive gardens. From our front porch on historic Main Street to the banks of the Trout River in the back, visitors find everything from fountains, birdhouses, antique tractors, authentic wagon wheels, quiet paths, and of course - stunning gardens alive with color! Visit the Phineas Swann Bed and Breakfast Inn in the springtime to see our gardens at their color peak, although Jay's careful planting has ensured a show off color from spring through fall.

"John & Jay owners and their staff Emmy & Karen were just terrific. The Inn is so beautiful and every day the breakfasts were great. The grounds were beautiful and the flowers and plantings were so colorful."

"Great service in a beautiful setting.
The Trout River runs cool and clear right behind the property with both shade and sun. The rest of the grounds are also beautiful with a nice little screened gazebo also available. The flowers around the yard were spectacular as well."

Missisquoi and Trout Rivers in the News

A 2008 bill to study the Missisquoi and Trout Rivers for potential designation as Wild and Scenic Rivers passed into law in March 2009, making them the only Vermont rivers to receive permanent protection in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.

Located in northern Vermont - with the Trout River flowing right behind our inn -  the rivers are important sources of clean water, and are part of the lifeblood of Vermont's natural and cultural heritage. They are bordered by the largest, and perhaps the highest-quality, silver maple floodplain forest remaining in the state. The Missisquoi and Trout rivers are home to diverse animal life including brook trout, rare freshwater mussels and spiny soft-shell turtles. The marshes surrounding the rivers host migratory birds including great blue herons and black terns. A special economic asset, the Missisquoi River attracts tourism with numerous recreational opportunities as a part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.

The law designated 50 miles of the Missisquoi River and approximately 20 miles of the Trout River for a study to be conducted by the National Park Service. "As the Missisquoi and Trout rivers flow through a landscape of forests, meadows, and family-run dairy farms, they weave together Vermont's natural and cultural heritage," said David Moryc, Director of River Protection for American Rivers.
