Experience a unique Vermont tradition – watch “sugaring” in action. Our local village is home to Godfrey’s Sugarhouse. The Godfreys go back generations and believe in the traditional approach to doing business with their neighbors. Our unique relationship with the family allows us to ensure that our guests have a complete tour of the facility. If they are not “boiling” when you arrive because they are out in out in the “sugar bush” – we have an agreement where you can just wander around and pick up your syrup and leave what you owe them in jar on the counter! This is the syrup we serve with our breakfasts at the Phineas Swann. Package includes:

Maple Sugaring

Vermont is the largest producer of pure maple syrup in the United States. Vermont syrup meets or exceeds the standards of quality, purity and density of all maple producing states and provinces. Vermont's maple syrup is 100% natural with nothing added and our climate and soil conditions are perfect for producing the best maple syrup. Vermont's many sugarbushes help Vermont to maintain its rich agricultural heritage and beautiful landscape.

When you travel to Vermont be sure to include time for visiting sugarhouses--each one is different and has its own personality. From small, traditional sugarhouses deep in the woods to large sugarhouses using equipment with the latest technology, you can watch the pride and care that goes into producing Vermont's first agricultural product of the year. Each year, the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers' Association, in conjunction with the Vermont Maple Foundation, celebrates Maple Open House Weekend. The 9th Annual Maple Open House Weekend will be held March 26-28, 2010.

Vermont maple syrup is available in four grades - Vermont Fancy, Vermont Grade A Medium Amber, Vermont Grade A Dark Amber, and Vermont Grade B. Sugarmakers also produce many fine food products from pure maple syrup, such as maple sugar, maple cream, and maple fudge.

The Phineas Swann Bed and Breakfast Inn uses maple syrup from our neighbors at the Godfrey Sugarhouse in Montgomery Center. The Godfreys go back generations and believe in the traditional approach to doing business with your neighbors. If they are not there – just pick up your syrup and leave what you owe them in jar on the counter.
