Open Studio Weekend

Each year, artists throughout the State of Vermont open their studios and doors to the public. Drive around and follow the many roads leading to Vermont's talented artists. We have a brochure in the front hallway which details all of the artists who open their workshops and studios on Open Studio Weekend, since many of the artists listed are open to the public year round.

Open Studio Weekend takes place yearly in May. Please call us to confirm the scheduled dates - these are dates when you have the greatest chance of seeing artists in their working environments.

Northern Forest Canoe Trail

In 2006 the Northeast Passage trade route from mid New York to the top of Maine was reincarnated with the 740 mile Northern Forest Canoe trail. The canoe trail traverses lakes, rivers and streams on a path from Old Forge, N.Y, to Fort Kent, Maine. In Vermont, the trail covers over 170 miles traveling over Lake Champlain, the Missisquoi River, Lake Memphremagog and the Clyde and Nulhegan rivers in the Northeast Kingdom. Vermont also offers the trail’s only foray into Canada, the historic “Grande Portage” to Lake Memphremagog, a one-time hot spot for rum runners. Vermont’s northwest corner – framed by the Green Mountains to the east and Lake Champlain to the west - is well-known for its border culture and active farmland.

The Missisquoi River traverses this landscape, pushing north into Canada before re-entering the United States on its way to Lake Champlain. Make it a full-day canoe paddle and follow the Missisquoi River westward as it travels between Richford and Enosburg Falls. With 40,000 acres of lake and ponds and 4,000 miles of rivers and streams, there is more water in our corner of the state than in any other region of Vermont outside of Lake Champlain.

Summer in Vermont

Summer brings the opportunity to explore our un-congested roadways by bicycle, motorcycle or car. Here at the Phineas Swann we offer our guests multiple maps of the area whether you choose to walk, bike, hike, cycle or drive, and our multiple area golf courses are one of the biggest bargains in the states.

And, of course, we have several "old fashioned swimmin' holes", many with waterfalls, for those that want to cool off in a refreshing, unspoiled, crystal clear Vermont river. Ask us for directions to some our favorite places! Fishing and hiking opportunities abound. Or perhaps you would like to browse through the many antique shops that dot the countryside, or attend one of the local auctions to find that special bargain you've been looking for. See our Outdoor Recreation pages to learn of the many opportunities that summer offers our visitors.

Summer here is awesome. Explore the treasures of this serene wonderland where pristine vistas, tranquil lakes, bubbling streams and majestic forests make it one of the most beautiful areas in the world. It is difficult to believe that such an unspoiled vacation area is only 1 ½ hours south of Montreal, 3 hours from Boston and 6 ½ hours from New York City.

"Excellent experience! The best Bed & Breakfast we've ever been too. Great decor, fantastic breakfasts, friendly hosts
and MUCH MORE!!!!!"

Farms and Meadows

Vermont is well known for many aspects of its farm community: maple syrup, fine cheeses, pastoral landscapes, Morgan horses, family farms, innovative, responsible practices, and historic visionaries who left farms that delight and teach us still.

In Franklin County, as in the Champlain Islands, you're surrounded by the vast views—waterscapes and wildflower meadows, farm fields and mountain highs, the fall foliage against our special backdrops of lake and verdant land. Wherever the scenery draws you, you'll delight in the detours. Rounds of golf at numerous courses in spectacular settings. The inviting shops. The delicious dining.

Come in summer. Get closer to nature at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge and so many other special wildlife viewing sites or get closer to each other on hay rides!

One of the best ways to visit this northern region, is to bike or walk along the Missisquoi Rail Trail, a series of trails developed over decommissioned railroad lines. The rails were removed, and the surfaces made even, to offer the visitor easy going access into the heart of Northern Vermont’s agricultural open lands. The “Trail” wanders through the farms fields and wetlands of Franklin County at a railroad’s pace – slow, steady grades with sweeping bends. For the full length of the Trail you’ll see the postcard images of Vermont you’ve seen everywhere. You’ll also see the working families and working landscapes that created and support this spectacular scenery.
