"The accommodations at the Phineas Swann were great! So much effort was put forth to make us feel welcome and at home that we are planning our next trip, with friends! The "dog friendly" atmosphere was such a nice feature that our yellow lab, Lucy, will always accompany us on future trips. Oh, and the breakfast was absolutely fantastic. Definitely a destination to get away from it all in a quiet country setting."

Wildlife Viewing and Birdwatching

The greater Jay Peak and Montgomery area offers some wonderful sighting of wildlife. Of course, our favorite is the moose. Known sites for spotting moose are Rte. 58 in Lowell, Balance Rock Road in Westfield, Rte. 105 in North Troy and Rte. 242 on the west side (the Montgomery side) of Jay Peak. Black bear can be seen roaming the woods and fields along Balance Rock Road in Westfield, Rte. 242 in Jay and Mine Road in Lowell. The best time is in the fall when the apples have fallen from the trees.

Huge flocks of wild turkeys can be seen in good numbers along the River Road in North Troy or on just about any road leading to and from Montgomery. Other bird species (even bald eagle) can also be seen along River Road and just north of the Big Falls area. Other bird watching spots are on the Loop Road in Troy/Westfield, and along the Missisquoi River. Jay Peak is also an excellent spot for bird-watching. Beavers can be seen frequently along the Missisquoi River which runs from Lowell to North Troy, or along Rte. 242 heading towards Jay.

Birding in the mountains can be one of the most fascinating experiences of a lifetime. From the Red-bellied Woodpeckers to Yellow-bellied Sap Suckers, birds come in all shapes, sizes and colors in the Jay Peak area.

Other great areas to view wildlife are the wildlife refuge area in Swanton (just down the round from us) and the refuge areas on the Lake Champlain Islands. In fact, just about anywhere in northern Vermont is a great place to see wildlife!

Barn Viewing

The many dairy barns in the Northeast Kingdom reflect an era when cows outnumbered people in Vermont. In 1930, 65% of the total farm income in Vermont came from the sale of dairy products. Today, sadly many dairy farmers struggle to make ends meet, but luckily a large number of the barns left standing have been converted to other uses since the buildings are quite often unique and are a part of the cultural heritage of U.S... Look for an attached milk house - a small structure connected to the side of the barn - to see if the barn is still used for dairy farming. If there is no attached milk house, the barn may not have housed cows after the 1950s when machines replaced hand milking and many farmers turned over their pails and sold their cows. Since the buildings go back to the late 1700s, these features will help you tell one Barn style from another:

English Barns (1770s to 1900s): The earliest colonial farmers built small barns - about 30 feet by 40 feet - with a pair of large, hinged wagon doors on the long side and unpainted vertical boards on the walls. English barns usually stood on a level site and had no basement.

Yankee Barns (1820s to 1870s): Most often built into a hillside so that manure could be pushed into a basement below, these barns could be expanded by adding additional bays to the rear. The entrance is on the small end, and the siding is horizontal to keep the draft out, with rooftop ventilators for fresh *and windows for light.

Late Bank Barns (1870s to 1900s): Huge multi-story bank barns, topped by a graceful gabled roof and decorative copula for ventilation were built to house huge herds of cattle and other livestock. At the uphill end, a covered bridge or "high-drive" allowed wagons to get to the upper hayloft.

Round Barns (1899 to 1920): This design takes advantage of gravity to move hay from the loft down to the cow stable and manure to the basement. The shape was meant to save labor, with all cows facing into a central feeding point. Larger herds and mechanization eventually forced most of these barns out of use. The first round barn in Vermont was built in 1899 and is located on Rt. 5 in Barnet. It is now used as storage space by the 7th generation of farmers to live and work the land in Round Barn Farm.

There are numerous examples of the above barn types in the northern part of the state – all within an easy drive from the Phineas Swann.

I would recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone who stays in this part of Vermont. This was my fifth time staying at the Swann, and I expect to be back in August.
