Lots of guests stay with us in the winter to ski or ride. But occasionally the powder just isn’t stellar. And some aren’t winter sports enthusiasts at all. A surprising number of our guests visit and never strap an Atomic or Burton to their feet. Yet they still have a great time, exploring some of the more offbeat or nontraditional activities the top of Vermont has to offer.

What follows then is our list of Top 10 Things To Do in Vermont Besides Skiing:

Number 10 – Drink Beer

Yes, yes. Sure you can do this and ski too. But if you really want to explore the amazing culture that is Vermont’s breweries, you’re going to need lots of time, as well as a designated driver. Vermont ranks first in the nation in the number of craft breweries per capita. (To see how your state fares, check here). And the breweries you can tour are among the nation’s best. Lost Nation, Hill Farmstead, Switchback, Queen City, Rock Art, Zero Gravity, 14th Star, 14th Star, Magic Hat, Fiddlehead — they’re all within a 60-minute or less drive from our door.

Number 9 – Go Dogsledding

What, you’ve never been on a dogsled? Our friends at Eden Ethical Dogsledding run amazing tours, and will give you a chance to mush like you’re racing in the Iditarod.

Number 8 – Try Snowshoeing

We have snowshoes we loan to our guests at no charge so you can try your hand at this exhilarating workout. Just check with us at breakfast and we can recommend trails that match your stamina and skill level. 

Number 7 – Ice Skating

Jay Peak boasts an amazing indoor skating rink, and many years the Montgomery Recreation Department sets up an outdoor rink in town as well, complete with skate rentals.

Number 6 – Try an Ice Wine

Boyden Valley Winery and Eden Ciders offer amazing ice wines and ice ciders for you to sample and buy. 

Number 5 – Practice your French

Visit Sutton, a charming Quebec eastern township just 20 minutes from our door. The town offers wonderful shopping, strolling and quaint restaurants to enjoy. If you want to practice your French, be our guest, but all the shopkeepers speak English as well.

Number 4 – Hunt for antiques

We decorate our inn with antiques we find at various shops and auctions. You too could find some treasures here at the top of Vermont. 

Number 3 – Go snowmobiling

Never snowmobiled before? We offer amazing snowmobile packages that leads you on a guided tour on some beautiful trails through the Green Mountains, all leading to amazing vistas. It’s a rush, and if you’ve never done it before you should try it.

Number 2 -Eat!

Montgomery is a Mecca for foodies. The town boasts an amazing number of restaurants, and anyone skiing Jay Peak that settles for ski resort food is doing their stomachs a disservice. From American to inventive to farm-to-table to pub food, the options for dining in Montgomery is amazing. 

And our number one non-ski recommendation is…

Get a massage and relax by the fire

This is our favorite. If you’re visiting us to escape the grind, we can’t think of anything more relaxing than a personal massage, followed by a soak in our outdoor hot tub, and a cozy drink in front of our wood-burning fireplace. Our Romantic Relaxation Package is sheer heaven.
